Daniel von Bargen, who played George Costanza's boss Mr. Kruger on "Seinfeld," is in critical condition after apparently attempting suicide by shooting himself in the head, TMZ reports.

Von Bargen, 61, was transported to an Ohio hospital after calling 911 from his Cincinnati apartment and telling the operator that he shot himself "in the temple."

The actor -- who played clueless, slack-happy employer Kruger from 1997 to 1998 -- told the 911 operator that he's diabetic, and that he was "supposed to go to the hospital and I didn't want to." According to von Bargen, doctors were "supposed to amputate at least a few toes."

Von Bargen also had a recurring role on "Malcolm in the Middle" as Commandant Spangler. His last listed role on IMDB.com is in the 2009 comedy "London Betty."

Attempts to reach a representative for von Bargen were unsuccessful.

Those wishing to listen to von Bargen's harrowing 911 call can do so at TMZ. (Warning: Graphic content.)
